How to Strike by Hand Blade (Sonnal Chigi) in Taekwondo

The strike known as "Chigi" in Korean is an attack executed by
swinging the arms. It is used as both an offensive and defensive
technique and can be executed in the form of a high, low, middle,
side, inward, outward, rising, or circular strike. This technique
can deliver a strike to the eye, temple, neck, back of the head, or
groin. These strikes can be painful and damaging enough to end a
fight without much effort. Chigi can be a very potent move when
executed with precision; it is particularly useful for women
defending themselves at close range.

The striking movement in Chigi revolves around impacting the opponent
by using a straight, open hand and then striking with the tips of the
fingers. It is executed very quickly with an extension of the arm that
leads to the final position. The arm is extended with the palm facing
down. In using Chigi, you are relying on the spinning force of the
body. You then you move the fist, palm or hand blade in a circle. The
elbow is either slightly bent or stretched when it strikes the target.
This article describes how to perform Chigi.

!! Method Of Forming The Hand Blade !!

Learn how to fold your hand into a solid striking surface first, in
order to prepare for the strike:

Press the four fingers tightly together. Press the four fingers
tightly together.

Bend the last and middle phalanx of the finger so that the tips of
the middle and index fingers are even in length. Press the thumb
firmly to the side of the first phalanx of the index finger. The
tip of the thumb is bent slightly toward the palm.

* Bend the last and middle phalanx of the finger so that the tips of
the middle and index fingers are even in length. Press the thumb
firmly to the side of the first phalanx of the index finger. The
tip of the thumb is bent slightly toward the palm.

* Back of hand blade (Sondeung) Create the hand blade or
knife (Sonnal) form. To achieve the Sonnal technique, use the back
of the hand blade to strike your target.

* Inner of hand blade (Sonnaldeung) In order to make use
of the inner side of the hand blade (Sonnaldeung), bend the thumb
sharply toward the palm. Use this technique to attack the face and
the ribs.

!! Striking - Chigi !!

Practice the single hand blade neck strike (Sonnal Olgul An Chigi).
Raise the knife hand over the shoulder, placing it slightly behind
the ear with the arm at the bent. In a wide arc, swing the hand
inward with a snapping motion.

* The palm should be facing upward at the point of impact.

* The arm remains bent at the elbow. Sonnal Olgul An Chigi
(single hand blade neck strike)

* Example of Sonnal Olgul An Chigi The lower edge of the
palm can strike the temple, the side of the neck, or the side of
the head.

Practice the single hand blade outward strike (Sonnal olgul bakkat
chigi). Raise the knife or blade hand over the shoulder, placing
the outer edge of the knife or blade hand near the ear, with the
palm facing the neck. Swing the hand outward in a wide arc to
strike the target at the the level of the head or neck.

* The palm will be facing downward at the point of impact.

* Sonnal Olgul Bakkat Chigi (single hand blade outward
strike) The arm is bent at the elbow.

* Example of Sonnal Olgul Bakkat Chigi This technique is
usually for striking the face or the neck.

Practice the hand palm strike to the jaw (Batangson Teok Chigi).
Place the fist at the waist. As you move forward, open the fist.
Batangson Teok Chigi (hand palm strike to the jaw)

* The palm strikes the target at the jaw. Example of
Batangson Teok Chigi

Practice the overturned hand blade strike (Sonnaldeung Olgul An
Chigi). Fold the thumb and press deeply into the palm. Swing the
hand inward in a wide arc to strike the target at neck, solar
plexus, or the head. This strike moves from the outside to the
inside. Note that:

* Sonnal Anchagi (the single hand blade striking from the outside)
is a different kind of strike; it is a reverse strike.

* Sonnaldeung Olgul An Chigi (overturned hand blad upper
strike) Example of Sonnaldeung Olgul An Chigi The
radial side of the hand is applied in attack with the arm straight
while striking.

* Sonnaldeung Mumtong An Chigi (overturned hand blade
middle strike) Practice the overturned hand blade middle strike
(Sonnaldeung Montong An Chigi). Fold the thumb and press deeply
into the palm. Swing the hand inward in a wide arc to strike the
target at the solar plexus. The radial side of the hand is applied
in attack with the arm straight while striking.

* Batangson Arae Anchigi (hand palm strike to the groin)
Practice the hand palm strike to the groin (Batangson Arae Momtong
Anchigi). Place the fist at the waist, move forward, open the fist
and form the palm, and strike to the groin.
Practice the curved hand neck strike (Ageum-Son Olgul Chigi). Open
up the the previously pressed thumb into a U-shape. Open up the
index finger as well, keeping it slightly curved. The remaining
three figures remain pressed into the palm. Ageum-Son
Olgul Chigi (curved hand neck strike)

* Example of Ageum-Son Chigi-Curved hand neck strike This
strike is achieved by applying the tip of the curved thumb and the
first phalanx of the index finger to the neck or throat.

!! Tips !!

* If the hand is not formed so that it is solid, the strike can be
painful when hitting a hard object (for example, breaking a board,
marble tiles or bricks).

* The striker should remain as relaxed as possible while striking,
tensing the muscles of the body only at the point of impact, and
then relaxing again while recoiling the striking hand.

* Strikes should channel force through just a small and vital area
of the attacker's body.

* To execute this attack to its fullest potential, the practitioner
must first learn how to condition the hand to be solid and strong,
as this strike can often be painful for inexperienced students
when striking a hard object.

* For Batangson Teok Chigi and Ageum-Son Olgul Chigi, the striking
hand is bent at a right angle at the wrist to avoid hitting with
the softer inner wrist tissue, which painful and can dislocate the
hand from wrist.

* Targets are numerous and some examples include the nose, jaw, ears
eyes, temple, back of the head, the groin.
