Happy Bubblegum Day! Learn a Key Life Skill: How to Blow a Bubble with Bubblegum

Blowing bubbles with bubblegum is a favorite pastime for
kids and kids-at-heart alike. Blowing bubbles isn't that
hard but the challenge increases when you try to blow the
biggest bubbles ever! Whether you're just keen to know what
it feels like to blow bubbles using bubblegum or you want to
blow bubbles that stick over your entire face after popping,
the tips provided in this article will get you started in
turning the art of chewing into the art of having a great
deal of fun.

!! Steps !!

Purchase some bubblegum. If you haven't ever bought bubblegum
before, be ready to find it in a wide array of flavors, like
strawberry, lime, apple, grape, melon, chocolate, and many more.
Choose the flavor you think you're going to enjoy the best; you can
try other types later.

* Other types of gum can be used to make bubbles but they won't be
as big and they'll usually pop too easily, reducing the fun. Some
gums are also stickier than bubblegum when they pop, making them
harder to remove from your face.

Just one piece is enough Take out one piece or strip of bubblegum
for starters. At this stage, you're just learning how to blow the
bubbles, so you don't want to overdo the amount of gum in your mouth.
Unwrap it and pop it into your mouth.

* Chew the bubblegum until it is soft and smooth. Work it around
your mouth. Chew until the flavor and sugar crystals in it mostly
disappear and the bubblegum is very pliable (soft and easily
bent). This can take a few minutes, so be patient.

* Don't wait too long. After a long time, perhaps half an hour, the
bubblegum will deteriorate, becoming stiffer and brittle, and
won't work as well.

Roll the gum into a ball with your tongue. Use the roof of your
mouth to steady the gum in place while you work the ball shape.

* Move this ball of gum so that it sits right behind your front
teeth. Use your tongue to flatten the ball into a small, flat
circle. Use the back of your teeth to help flatten it by pushing
the ball into them.

* Position the flattened gum behind your front teeth. Push through
this flattened piece of gum with your tongue. Keep pushing until
your tongue is covered by a thin, stretched layer of bubblegum.
You'll need to be very gentle or you might poke your tongue right
through; if that does happen, just form the ball again and start
over.

Pull your tongue out of the layer of gum. Hold the layer between
your lips. Blow gently so you can feel the air begin to fill the gum
and start to push the gum out of your mouth in a bubble shape. Keep
blowing.

* Many people make the mistake of blowing just out of their lips
rather than using breath from deeper within; lip breath is not
strong enough to produce a proper bubble so be sure to put more
energy into it.

Keep blowing as long as you can, or until the bubble bursts.
Practice, practice, practice. You may not succeed the first few
tries but that's all part of the fun. Just keep trying until it
happens for you and you get the hang of what it feels like.
Practice in front of a mirror so you can see when the tip of the gum
is in the right position. It is also recommended that you practice
indoors where you won't be bothered by wind or sunshine.

your lips if you're finding it too sticky.

Proceed to blowing the biggest bubble possible. After you're used to
blowing bubbles with one piece, aim for much larger bubbles. This
time, chew two to three pieces of gum at the same time. Like before,
chew until the flavor disappears and the gum is nice and soft.

* As before, stick your tongue into the gum to make a hole, then
blow to make a pouch.

* Blow slowly and evenly to make the large bubble. Blow and blow and
blow until you think it's the biggest one you've ever blown.

Have bubblegum blowing competitions with your friends. One of the
best ways to get big bubbles is to be filled with the competitive
spirit to outdo your friends' bubbles. Get to it! For more ideas,

!! Tips !!

* There are many different brands of gum. Try all and see which fits
you best. In fact, sugar-free gum is the best for bubbles because
the less sugar in the gum, the stronger the bubble will be.

* Try chewing more than one piece of gum, so that you can blow a
bigger bubble.

* When you get good at this, you may want to try blowing a bubble
_inside_ of another bubble. To do this, just blow a bubble, seal
it off with your lips, make another bubble with the remaining gum,
and blow! It's tricky but with practice, you'll learn to perfect
it.

* If you can roll your tongue, try sticking it into the bubble when
it's blown up!

* Don't add water or ice to your mouth; this will make the gum
harder and not so easy to blow. It may also make the gum
deteriorate faster.

* Be sure to chew the gum for at least four minutes before blowing
your first bubble. The gum must be "broken in" for it work well.

!! Warnings !!

* If you're wearing braces, use gum that won't stick to them; check
that the gum confirms this. Otherwise, the gum will most probably
stick to your braces and cause you a lot of trouble.

* Try not to get gum in your hair and clothes. If it does, scrape
off the excess with something stiff but not sharp, like a plastic
knife, and try something oily, like peanut butter or oil, to
remove the residue. Be ready to remove the oil by, for instance,
soaking with detergent. For a surface like a sofa from which you
might not be able to remove oil well, chill the bubblegum with ice
to make it easier to scrape off.

* Careful not to blow too hard and fast, otherwise it can pop
suddenly and surprise you.

* Take care not to let the gum could shoot and land on someone's
face or hair. Gross factor!

* Sometimes it might hurt when the bubble pops across your whole
face. It depends on your constitution and the type of bubble.

* You can choke on gum. Don't increase your risk with too much,
more than one piece at a time if you're a child or perhaps two for
an adult. Don't let a small child chew alone. If someone chokes,
call for help and where appropriate perform the Heimlich maneuver
and other first aid. You can also perform the Heimlich maneuver
on yourself.
