How to Make a Folded Star Christmas Ornament

How to Make a Folded Star Christmas Ornament

Do you love a country Christmas, with homemade Christmas ornaments and
your own decor? If so, here's a beautiful and relatively low-cost
craft project that will take you around an hour to complete.

!! Steps !!

* Obtain the needed materials. (See the list in "Things You'll Need"
below.)

* Cut the fabric into 2 inch (5cm) by 2 1/2 inch (6.5cm) rectangles.
For smaller or larger Styrofoam balls, you can measure the
circumference of the ball and divide by 8, then add half an inch
(or centimeter) for the height and width.

* Place fabric on the ball and pin it down. Place a square or
rectangle of fabric on the ball and pin it in place by its
corners.

* Poke a pin through the center of the starting square and then into
the ball. This will mark a starting point.

* Pin through the center...Poke a pin through the center of a
piece of fabric.

* ... then into the ball next to your starter pin.Poke that same
pin into the cloth covered area of the ball near the starter pin.

* Fold in half.Fold the cloth down in half over itself.

* Fold down corners.Fold the corners down the center from the
pin point to form a folded triangle.

* Pin down corners. There should be 5 pins total per fabric
point.Pin the bottom edge of the triangle with 4 pins. Use one for
each end of the raw cloth edges.
Repeat this pin and fold action many more times, for a total of
three rows per hemisphere as follows:

* Row one done.4 points touching the pole.

* Row Two Row Two Completed Row 28 points in the next row,
spacing the tips of the points approximately half an inch (1.27cm)
below the pole, and lining the points up with the points above and
the folded edges and lines with the row above. Check your
measurement to see if three rows will reach the center meridian or
not. Widen the distance between rows if necessary.

* Completed Row three.8 points in the third row should bring
your raw edges to the equator.

* After three rows, if you have not reached the equator of the ball
with the raw edges of your folded points, you will need to unpin
and repin the rows with more or less spacing to compensate.

Sight along your fold lines with pins to help you find the "South
Pole" of your ball. Find the "South Pole" of the ball.

* Pin a new square on the ball and mark the center point.Mark
the center point of the "South Pole".

* Repeat the process of making rows of points from the "South Pole".

* Covered ball, ready for meridian coverage with ribbon or
lace. The ball should be totally covered by now, with a row of raw
edges. The poles will appear as a "country star".

* Ribbon threaded through lace. Pin and/or glue the ribbon or
lace around the equator to cover up the raw edges.

* Loop.Pin and/or glue a loop of ribbon to allow you to attach
the ornament to your Christmas tree.

* Some others... Center can be a picture or a small cross
stitch. And yet another.Graciously accept your friends'
compliments and show them how you did it!

!! Tips !!

* Row spacing is tricky sometimes. You may want to test spacing
before placing an entire row. 8 points x 5 pins apiece is a lot of
poking!

* Any size Styrofoam ball can be used. Just measure the
circumference and divide by 8 to get the basic rectangle width.
Add half an inch to ensure that the sides touch after folding. For
example: a 10 inch diameter ball would (divide by 8) come out to
1.25 inches. Add half an inch and this equals 1.75 inches wide.
The height can be 1.25 if you wish, or you can just make 1.75 inch
squares and be done with it.

* Circumference divided by 8 equals basic height. Add half an inch
(1.27cm) to the basic height to get your basic width for the
rectangles you will pin.

* Use stainless steel pins. Aluminum pins will bend and steel pins
(non stainless) will rust over time.

* Shorter pins are easier to poke in.

* Use a thimble to prevent sore finger tips.
