How to Manage Belly Button Rings During Pregnancy

How to Manage Belly Button Rings During Pregnancy

Congratulations! Just when you thought your belly
button could not get any cuter... you learned
about the baby hiding beneath it. But how do
belly button rings work with your growing belly?
Here are some tips to get you and your belly
button through the next nine months.

!! Steps !!

* Talk to your obstetrician about your belly button rings. Most
mothers can wear their regular belly button rings up until about 5
or 6 months; however, if the piercing is new, gets torn or is
injured, there could be a risk of blood poisoning from metal
rings, which could affect the health of your baby. Your
obstetrician may recommend removing your metal ring sooner or
switching to plastic in these cases.
Consider buying new rings. You may find these types of rings
helpful as your pregnancy progresses:

* Plastic maternity belly button rings. The good news: they're much
cheaper than the metal rings and they're easy to find online. Most
range from US$3 to $6 each. What's more, they'll bend and stretch
with your tummy as it grows!

* Large gauge rings. The larger the gauge, the thinner the ring, and
the better it will fit as your tummy grows. Shop for a 14 gauge
ring, which is the largest gauge.

* Circular rings. These are less likely to fall out than barbell
shaped rings. As your tummy grows, it's possible for the pierced
hole to temporarily stretch as well. If it gets large enough,
there is a chance barbell rings could slip through it.

* Use a moisturizer. As your tummy stretches,
your belly button will probably stretch. The skin around your
piercing has more freedom to stretch, which makes it more prone to
stretch marks and scarring. This can be reduced or prevented by
the use of moisturizers. (It is commonly believed that cocoa
butter is the best moisturizer to use during pregnancy, although
no studies have been specifically done showing the effectiveness
of cocoa butter on stretch marks.)

* Leave your belly button ring alone. Try to avoid tugging on it or
fiddling with it because your pregnancy will make the skin more
elastic and more prone to stretching or tearing.

* Plan to remove or switch out your usual belly button ring around 5
or 6 months. This will probably make you much more comfortable and
will help prevent stretch marks around your belly button. You can
remove your ring completely, switch to a plastic maternity ring,
or switch to a larger gauge metal ring.
Know what to expect as your baby grows:

* An outie: Say hello to the inside of your belly button. If you're
an innie, don't worry if your belly button turns inside out as
your tummy stretches. This is normal and is not caused by your
belly button ring. Take the opportunity to clean out all the lint
you could never reach before!

* Itching: this can be caused by the skin stretching. Moisturizer
will help.

* Belly button pain and pressure: this can be caused by muscles
stretching, but let your doctor know if you experience noticeable
pain.

!! Tips !!

* As with any piercing, keep the area clean, and if you notice
anything unusual, raise the matter with your doctor or
obstetrician.
