Propoxyphene (Darvon & Darvocet) pulled off the market today. If you take this medication, here's what to do.

On November 19, 2010, the United States' Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) announced that manufacturers of
propoxyphene agreed to pull the drug off American markets.
Prescribed to over 10 million people under the names Darvon
and Darvocet, the pain medication carries risks of
potentially deadly heart rhythm abnormalities.

!! Steps !!

Continue taking your medication as prescribed. Take the proper
dosage at your prescribed times. Suddenly stopping a medication
regimen without close physician supervision carries serious risks.

Understand why the drug was removed from the U.S. market. Following
an FDA trial study of propoxyphene, it was discovered that the risk
of serious heart rhythm problems outweighs the benefits of pain
reduction. Develop your opinion and write down any worries you have
about taking it.

Contact your doctor. Call immediately and ask what you should do
with your prescription. Express your concerns you may have about
taking propoxyphene. Follow their instructions carefully.

* If you are prescribed a new pain medication, do not delay in
switching unless your doctor advises you to.

* Dispose of the unused medication appropriately. Medication that is
carelessly disposed of can contaminate the water supply, or fall
into the wrong hands.

!! Warnings !!

* Do not discontinue or modify a medication regimen unless
explicitly told to by your doctor.
