How to Train Your Patience

How to Train Your Patience

Patience is an important trait that allows us to persevere
and remain focused in matters of daily living. Here are some
exercises to help you train your patience.

!! Steps !!

Understand the purpose of the following exercises. Perseverance [1]
in trying these exercises will eventually help you overcome your
nervousness and impatience. You will have a lot of practice dealing
with your nerves and lack of patience during your repeated trials.

* Be aware that the very first few times you try these exercises,
you might fail. Don't let this discourage you. Try again and
again. After a while, mastery of these exercises will feel like an
incredible achievement [2].

!! First Exercise !!

Take a piece of cardboard, about the size of a large sheet of 8'' x
11'' (20.3cm x 27.9cm) paper.

Cut a hole in the cardboard [3], about the size of an ink-stain
(about an inch or 2.5cm in diameter).

Seat yourself comfortably, then take the cardboard by the lower
rim between your thumb and index finger, the arm well extended
out from the body.

* Look through the ink-stain sized hole on the cardboard
so that the stain shaped hole is exactly enclosed, with none of
the cardboard surface appearing to your eye.

* Do not exceed 20 seconds on your first few trials. For
the first few times you practise this, do not exceed twenty
seconds. After you gain more experience, you may extend the time,
little by little.

* Assess your success [4]. The key is to be very exact in this
experiment, with no speck of cardboard appearing to your eye
during the exercise.

!! Second Exercise !!

Similar to the first exercise, only this time take a sheet of paper
[5] instead of a piece of cardboard.

Cut a hole in an ink-sized shape as before.

Do the same exercise as in the first exercise. You must try to
keep the paper stiff as well, while trying to focus your eyes on
the hole. If the paper bends, try the exercise over again.

!! Third Exercise !!

Mark a line on the wall. Trace [6] a straight horizontal line on a
wall. Use a ruler to guide you.

If you cannot draw on the wall itself, pin up a sheet of white
paper and affix it in place for drawing over.

Fill a glass of water [7] to a third of an inch (8.46mm) of the
brim, and hold it toward the bottom, so that the water will be on a
level with the line traced on the wall.

* You must ensure that the surface of the water will not deviate
from the line.

* Hold the glass at arm's length from the body till you feel tired.
With practice, this exercise can be done without the slightest
stirring of water. Gradually increase the duration you can do
this.

!! Fourth Exercise !!

* _ Now fill the glass full_ of water... Fill the glass now
to the very top and repeat the third exercise.

* If the water overflows, try again.

!! Fifth Exercise !!

* _ Fill the glass full_ to the brim. After filling the
glass to the brim, hold it up from the bottom by the thumb and
fourth finger for two seconds.

* Move it _slowly_ from right to left, keeping its brim level with
the line on the wall.

!! Tips !!

* Share your experience with a friend or sibling. See how they fare;
you might even like to time one another's experiences with each
exercise, or be competitive in your training.
